Different Deterrents for Different Birds: Pigeons, Turkeys, Ibis, Seagulls, and Magpies

You might think that scaring away birds is a pretty simple concept. Birds are simple creatures, after all, so an effective deterrent for a pigeon ought to work for a magpie, right? As it turns out, different birds are quite unique in their behaviour and in how they respond to different tactics. Even among the same type of bird, there are many factors and characteristics to consider when planning how to deal with a particular pest problem.

Since our founding in 2001, Birdsoff has been dedicated to studying precisely these differences and testing out new products designed to address the unique bird infestations that we see across Australia. In particular, we’ve considered how combining a variety of deterrents -- physical, audible, and visible -- can uproot even the most dedicated bird population. We understand that every situation is different. So, whether you need a seagull deterrent or a bush turkey deterrent, have a small or large infestation, or need a solution for a home, a business, or a boat, Birdsoff has products designed to work for you.

You can see the full list of products here, which is searchable along with all these parameters, from location to bird type, and more.

Spikes and Other Deterrents for Seagulls and Pigeons

Pigeons and seagulls are in many ways the classic example of the irritating flying pest. While they won’t treat you quite as badly as some species, a large population of either can turn your business (or boat) into a museum of bird droppings. Some approach this problem after-the-fact, spending countless hours cleaning once the damage is done. Using a pigeon deterrent is a better way.

Rather than spending your weekend scrubbing bird droppings off the boat, invest in preventative measures that will solve the problem before it starts. You might not think your bird problem is severe enough to warrant this kind of solution but, if it’s got you spending any significant time in close quarters with bird droppings, you’re going to appreciate how much of a difference a little planning can make.

With these kinds of birds, the solution can be simple too. For pigeons, in particular, you might not need more than some spikes to make it hard for them to land on your property, or a menacing-looking owl decoy.

Tougher Targets: Magpies and Turkeys

Some birds are a bit more stalwart though. For birds such as bush turkeys and ibises, many have turned to toxic sprays to keep these unwelcome visitors at bay. However, keeping your garden free of freeloaders doesn’t require putting yourself or your plants at risk from chemical-heavy pesticides. The Birdsoff Bush Turkey and Ibis Solution, by contrast, offers an all-natural approach that’s just as effective in getting these pests to leave.

Then there’s the magpies. These aggressive little hell-raisers are well known for being a genuinely tricky nuisance. Our multi-faceted approach towards magpie deterrents, therefore, becomes essential. Since magpies are a bit smarter than some winged pests, staying a step ahead is crucial to winning your battle with the offending birds. To this end, Birdsoff offers a range of magpie-focused tools that, when used together with some care will convince even the most intelligent birds to leave you alone.

We have supplied a range of our bird scarer products to the following brands for the past 16 years.
